About the Project

The Maritime sector finds itself in front of a mounting wave of pressure to embrace clean and sustainable solutions. While the Aerospace and Automotive industries have faced similar pressures over the past two decades, the maritime domain presents a unique set of challenges due to its diverse fleet of vessels and limited understanding of true usage. Marine Leaders recognize the urgency of transformation but are hindered by a scarcity of meaningful data to inform their requirements and evaluate potential technology solutions.
Led by PurpleSector, and drawing on technologies, tools, and techniques learned in the white heat of Formula 1™, the Clean Hybrid Alternative Marine Powertrains 2 (CHAMP2) project will close this knowledge gap and transform the sector.
CHAMP2 has five key objectives:
01
Unlocking Key Insights
Through meticulous data collection and analysis, CHAMP2 will look deeply into vessel operations to understand true usage and performance. This analysis will enable informed decision-making and precise requirements generation.
02
Harnessing Digital Design
Embracing the power of cutting-edge digital design tools, CHAMP2 will dramatically accelerate the maritime development lifecycle, from initial problem understanding to optimised engineering solution.
03
Setting Environmental Standards
Collaborating with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and the Department for Transport (DfT), CHAMP2 will raise the environmental bar by contributing to the development of UK Clean Marine Standards.
04
Renewing Workforce Skills
By identifying talent gaps and enhancing apprenticeship programs, CHAMP2 will ensure that Maritime Professionals are ready to support next generation vessels throughout their service life.
05
Best of Both
Demonstration of the PurpleSector flexible hybrid marine powertrain with its exceptional range, formidable power, and emissions-free running.
The CHAMP2 project is part of the Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition Round 3 (CMDC3), which was announced in September 2022, funded by UK Government and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. As part of the CMDC3, the Department allocated £60m to 19 flagship projects supported by 92 UK organisations to deliver real world demonstration R&D projects in clean maritime solutions. Projects will take place in multiple locations around the UK from as far north as the Shetland Isles and as far south as Cornwall.

The CMDC3 is part of the UK Shipping Office for Reducing Emission’s (UK SHORE) flagship multi-year CMDC programme. In March 2022, the Department announced the biggest government investment ever in our UK commercial maritime sector, allocating £206m to UK SHORE, a new division within the Department for Transport focused on decarbonising the maritime sector. UK SHORE is delivering a suite of interventions throughout 2022-2025 aimed at accelerating the design, manufacture and operation of UK-made clean maritime technologies and unlocking an industry-led transition to Net Zero.
The CHAMP2 project follows on from CHAMP 1 which was led by Mathwall Engineering, a PurpleSector sister company. Learn about CHAMP1’s success here:
